What is the difference between licensing and notification in NSW?

In NSW, licensing applies to food producers; notification applies to retail food businesses like restaurants, cafés, and takeaways.

In New South Wales, food businesses operate under either a licensing or notification requirement, but not both.

Licensing applies to:

  • Egg producers

  • Dairy, meat, and seafood processors

  • Plant product handlers

  • Food services for vulnerable persons

  • Food transporters

Notification applies to:

  • Restaurants, cafés, and takeaway shops

  • Supermarkets and grocery stores

  • Mobile food outlets

Notification businesses register with their local council. If you're unsure which category applies to your business, check with the NSW Food Authority.
