In New South Wales, food businesses operate under either a licensing or notification requirement, but not both.
Licensing applies to:
Egg producers
Dairy, meat, and seafood processors
Plant product handlers
Food services for vulnerable persons
Food transporters
Notification applies to:
Restaurants, cafés, and takeaway shops
Supermarkets and grocery stores
Mobile food outlets
Notification businesses register with their local council. If you're unsure which category applies to your business, check with the NSW Food Authority.
